1. Begin on a Monday: Rinse the mala in Gangajal, let it dry and offer it before Lord Shiva.
2. Chant: ॐ ह्रीं नमः (Om Hreem Namah) or Om Namah Shivaya, 108 times.
3. For japa: Hold the mala in your right hand and move one bead at a time with the thumb and middle finger. Turn back at the guru bead instead of crossing it.
4. To wear: Wear it around the neck as a kantha.
